JOSHUA TREE, CA — A Community Emergency Response Team in Twentynine Palms, residents who will be able to respond at the neighborhood level to major disasters, when first responders are overwhelmed, came a step closer to reality on Thursday, August 5, 2010.

Reach Out Morongo Basin Executive Director Sandy Fleck and Volunteer Coordinator Mary Reeves, at a breakfast meeting of the Basin-Wide Foundation, accepted a check for $10,000 from Daniel Foster, CEO of the Community Foundation of San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The money will help pay for training for CERT volunteers who will then help their neighbors prepare, respond and recover from major disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and wildland fires.

Training in Twentynine Palms will be held, in conjunction with the Twentynine Palms Fire Department, in late October and early November. Participants will be taught skills such as fire suppression, first aid and light search and rescue.
