2010 Annual Report

Mission Statement:
The purpose of Reach Out Morongo Basin is to provide support, assistance, education, and referrals to those in need in the Morongo Basin. 

Executive Summary: This year showcased Reach Out Morongo Basin’s volunteer management capabilities in new partnerships with area agencies. The Twentynine Palms Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) was established and trained 20 volunteers in disaster preparedness. This partnership with the City of Twentynine Palms and the Twentynine Palms Fire Department was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and brought an entire new genre of volunteers to Reach Out. Volunteers continue to be the backbone of this organization, reaching into the homes of seniors and those in need to assist in any way, shape or form.

Transportation Highlights:

  • Reach Out’s two vans drove 42,053 miles (2,232 trips) to medical, dental, and other health-related appointments within the Morongo Basin and down the hill to the Coachella Valley and the San Bernardino areas.  There was a 17% increase in the number of trips (1,908 to 2,232) from 2009 to 2010!
  • Continue to partner with Braille Institute in Rancho Mirage to drive weekly to their facility.  Twelve vision-impaired riders go to classes, enrichment activities and social functions each Tuesday down the hill. Added a weekly trip on Fridays to the warm water therapy pool at the Morongo Basin Senior Support Center in Yucca Valley. 

 Volunteer Highlights:           

  • 197 volunteers provided 10,286 hours of service to neighbors in need in the Morongo Basin in 2010. Additionally, Reach Out Morongo Basin volunteers manned offices in the Twentynine Palms Senior Center for 40 hours each week and the Yucca Valley Senior Center for 12 hours each week to handle walk-ins, referrals and telephone calls.
  • Trained 20 volunteers in disaster preparedness for the new Twentynine Palms Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
  • 15 volunteers received U.S. Presidential Citations for their volunteer service. 
  • 48 volunteers participated in Disney’s Give a Day, Get a Day promotion which Disney gave free admission to Disneyland in exchange for an eight hour day of service. Reach Out volunteers took full advantage of this promotion and did a variety of jobs for our seniors to earn their certificate.
  • Executive Director Sandy Smith was awarded the Our Lady of Guadalupe medal by Bishop Barnes of the Diocese of San Bernardino for her charitable work in the community.
  • Volunteer is on hand every Wednesday afternoon to provide notary services and personal business help to seniors in the Twentynine Palms office. 

 Public Relations Highlights:

  • Increased online fundraising, e-newsletters, social networking & other electronic media to promote the mission of Reach Out Morongo Basin.
  • Published six editions the Reach Out Morongo Basin bi-monthly newsletter. Distributed 900 copies of each edition. Sustained printing, postage and distribution with newsletter sponsorships.

  • Angel Members – 232 Angels donated in excess of $25,072 in 2010 with 50 Angels making a monthly donation
  • Faith Community – 20 faith groups provided financial support in the amount of $33,596 plus volunteers, in-kind donations and prayer support. In-kind Donations of $19,707 in the form of office space, utilities, food and volunteer recognition items. The City of Twentynine Palms and the Town of Yucca Valley both donate office space and utilities for the operation of our two offices. 
  • Fundraising earned $19,947 from our bingo partnership with the Twentynine Palms Youth Club, the sale of Stater scrip cards ($4,295), reflective address signs plus special events including

    • 6th Annual Parade of Homes in February ($5,360)
    • Clergy Wait Night in April
    • Community Clean Up Days in April and October
    • Holiday Craft Faire in November
